The Building Form of OBAYASHI MORI SORA MIRAI Begins to Take Shape
Construction of OBAYASHI MORI SORA MIRAI, now underway for GREEN×EXPO 2027, has progressed with safety as the top priority since work began in February 2026. This report introduces scenes from the construction site as the exhibition pavilion takes shape, with an emphasis on environmental considerations and sustainability.
1 Construction Progress
(1) Start of Construction and Foundation Work (February to April 2026)
Excavation and ground improvement work were carried out to construct the underground foundation that supports the building. CleanCrete™ (*1), a low-carbon concrete, was used for the foundation concrete.
Excavation and ground improvement work were carried out using hydraulic excavators to build a stable foundation.
A thin layer of blinding concrete was placed to accurately set the building’s position and elevation, followed by reinforcing bar assembly to strengthen the foundation.
After reinforcing bar work was completed, formwork was assembled around the reinforcement to maintain the specified shape during subsequent concrete placement.
As concrete (CleanCrete) is poured, vibrators are used to remove trapped air from within the concrete and compact it evenly.
(2) Structural Frame Erection and Assembly of Exterior Support Members (May to June 2026)
Shoring materials, which are typically used during excavation to prevent surrounding soil and other materials from flowing into the work area, were used as part of the structural frame, including the columns and beams. Scaffolding materials were then assembled on top of the concrete around the outer perimeter as support members for the exterior cladding.
The reddish-brown members shown here are shoring materials used for the columns and beams of the pavilion.
For the cylindrical buildings at both ends, scaffolding materials are being assembled by crane outside the shoring materials as exterior support members.
(3) Installation of Exterior Cladding (From July 2026)
Installation of the wood-based exterior panels has begun, and the overall outline of OBAYASHI MORI SORA MIRAI is becoming visible.
Each wood-based exterior panel has a different tone and grain pattern. After the exposition, the panels will be processed and reused as temporary fencing and other materials at construction sites.
2 Toward Completion
Going forward, work will move into interior finishing and building services, including electrical and air-conditioning systems. Around winter, finishing work is scheduled for the exterior areas, including planting. The team is also working on the exhibits as it moves toward completion in February 2027.
